Mixed-grained till material

MIXED-GRAINED TILL IN PAVEMENT STRUCTURES

By: Helene Kennedy

The road network in Sweden has traditionally been constructed using crushed rock material because access to this type of material is generally good. However, this often involves transportation to road construction sites.

Because 75 percent of Sweden’s land surface is covered by glacial till, greater utilization of this material would reduce transportation, thereby decreasing the strain on the environment and yielding more cost-efficient solutions.

The objective of the study was to explore how mixed-grained till performs in road construction and identify and establish which properties determine the material’s function and, as a result, could expand the material’s area of application.

One of the study’s conclusions is that the application area of till material can be increased, but that some conditions must be met during the implementation phase. Because the grain size of fill material varies, the focus on such factors as classifying and selecting the material must increase.
