Building energy efficiency

ENERGY PERFORMANCE OF MULTIFAMILY BUILDINGS – BUILDING CHARACTERISTIC AND USER INFLUENCE

By: Jan-Ulric Sjögren

The objective of the project was to develop a method for evaluating building energy performance. The study was based on data from the Swedish Energy Agency’s project eNyckeln, which is a tool for collecting statistics and comparing energy use in buildings.

To measure the energy performance of a building, the total heat loss coefficient (Ktot) was determined. A rectilinear relationship that is unique for each building was determined using linear regression. The slope of the line is a measure of the building’s total loss factor. The measure can be used to verify a building’s energy performance.

This method of measuring energy-efficiency is less sensitive to the behavior of residents than the traditional measurement reported by the Swedish National Board of Housing.
